What is VIDEO CONFERENCING?

Video conferencing allows users to see and hear, and be seen and heard by, participants at off campus locations live via a video screen and audio monitor. This technology allows participation in forums, lectures, meetings and discussions which were formerly impossible due to time constraints, conflicting work schedules or budget limitations. It eliminates lodging and transportation costs, as well as unproductive travel hours, and allows greater flexibility in arranging meeting times. Using high-quality, compressed video and audio technology, video conferencing allows easy and effective long distance communication.

Kerr Hall Room 25B is a 10-seat conference room with an automated video camera, two monitors, a VCR, a document camera and speaker phone.

Kerr Hall Room 61 is a larger room, similarly equipped to 25B. The room is a multi-use facility, consequently requiring a 10 working day notice for reservation.

Jack Baskin Engineering156 is UCSC's Distance Education Classroom and doubles as a state of the art multimedia facility. This room is heavily booked for curricular use and requires advance notice for videoconferencing.

UCSC's video conference room is networked with all the University of California and California State campuses, the UC Office of the President in Oakland, the Lawrence Livermore, Lawrence Berkeley and Los Alamos National Laboratories. The UCSC video conference room is also capable of connecting with other sites across the state, the nation and the world.
